The Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law on January 5th, eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions, introduced in 1983, had unfairly reduced Social Security benefits for many retired public servants and their spouses who worked in both covered and non-covered jobs during their careers. Nearly three million Americans were affected, but now, their hard-earned benefits will no longer be reduced. Under the new law, over 2.1 million Social Security retirees will see their benefits increase by an average of $360 per month. Additionally, more than 700,000 surviving spouses can expect a monthly increase ranging from $700 to $1,190 on average. The Social Security Administration is currently working on implementing these changes and will share updates as soon as possible.
