What Happened to Spirit Airlines — and Why Travelers Should Care

For many travelers, Spirit Airlines was the difference between taking the trip and staying home.

They were never trying to be fancy. It was not built around luxury seats, free snacks, or extra legroom. Its promise was simple: we’ll get you there for less, but the extras are on you.

That is why they mattered.

Even if you never flew Spirit, its low fares helped pressure other airlines to keep prices competitive. Their ultra-low-cost model forced larger carriers to respond with cheaper fare options of their own, including “basic economy” tickets.

But eventually, the model became harder to sustain.

Spirit struggled with heavy losses after the pandemic, rising fuel costs, higher operating expenses, debt, and failed merger efforts. Earlier this year they began winding down operations and canceled flights, marking the end of one of the most recognizable budget airlines in America.

For travelers, the biggest question is simple: will airfare get more expensive?

In some cases, yes.

Spirit was especially important on leisure-heavy routes — places like Florida, Las Vegas, the Caribbean, and other vacation destinations. It also served many price-sensitive travelers flying out of smaller or secondary airports. Without Spirit competing on those routes, other airlines may have less pressure to keep fares low.

That does not mean every ticket suddenly doubles. Other budget carriers may step in and fill some of the gaps. But replacing a low-cost airline is not as easy as moving planes around and calling it solved. Routes have to be profitable, crews have to be available, and airlines are not exactly famous for charity pricing.

Spirit gave travelers affordable options for years. Its disappearance matters because fewer low-cost options usually means less pressure to keep prices down.

And for consumers, that is the real takeaway: when competition disappears, choice usually gets smaller — and prices often get bigger.
